Client: Diaspora

Diaspora is a bilingual magazine (Portuguese/English) that promotes the Brazilian language and culture in Ireland through literature. The publication was in the process of editing its first edition with the theme Irish-Brazilian Connections. In this first issue, the magazine would showcase different genres such as poetry, chronicle literature, interviews and photographs. The design problem was to find out 3 things:

    1. What would be the best solution to the magazine’s bilingual issue?
    2. How the magazine could visually differentiate from other literary magazines in Ireland?
    3. How the magazine could visually connect with its audience?

After briefing the client, researching and looking at best practice examples, I started focusing on the aspect of how the magazine cover could catch the attention of the Brazilian audience and create a feeling of culture identification and recognition. Inspired by a Brazilian envelope letter, I designed the magazine cover.

To have a certain rhythm and pleasing reading, the layout of the magazine was divided into four sections which “breaks” of white and coloured backgrounds were created to maintain the reader interested and provide pauses, allowing the reader to stop and reflect on the information they have received.

One of the most critical aspects of the magazine is its bilinguality. So to draw a clear distinction between Portuguese and English texts and the different text categories, I created four different paragraphs alignments that will help the reader to differentiate the text content of each category present in the magazine.

And everything were put together in a presentation on Google Slides:
